Day 05 - Lhasa(Tibet) - Chengdu (SW China)
29 Apr 2007 (Sun)
Temp: 3 - 17c (Lhasa), 14-27c (Chengdu)
Woke up around 0645h to watch the sunrise...its really sad to leave the mysterious Tibet so fast just when I have fully acclimatise the weather conditions here. Here is the view of the ~5000m high mountains behind my hotel...note that it looks about 1400m high coz Lhasa city itself is around 3600m high.

Tibetan Army Camp
Entrance to go to National Expressway 318. Though the speed limit is at 40km/h (??!!), most vehicles go more than 90km/h....u often see swvering of vehicles, honking here and there...

Look at the amount of baggage on the roof of the long-distance bus...
Entrance of the 2.4km tunnel that cuts through the Tibetan peaks, cutting short the distance to airport by 1h!

Arrived Lhasa Gongkar Airport at 0925h...We bid our guide and driver farewell; before that, they enticed us to come back again to the rural areas of Tibet for more adventures instead of the typical attractions we saw.
Now for the shocking news...we arrived at the check-in counter of Air China. Apparently, our CA4404 flight (Airbus 319) was totally full. As always, some airlines always overbooked their flights, we must be one of the unlucky ones or should I say lucky, coz we are transferred to the next flight out ~1h later on CA 4402 (Airbus 333) with guaranteed seats on priority. Seat 12K. We weren't the only ones who were booted out of flight CA 4404; many others behind me were complaining why CA 4404 was full...

Air China Flight CA 4404 on A319
Shortly after I settled down on the seats, the announcement came to say all flights to Chengdu will be delayed due to late plane arrival caused by foggy weather. The announcer list all the flights that will be affected (it was indeed a long list)...and for mine..CA 4402 flight was changed to 1100h, then 1200h, and finally adjusted back to 1130h. Meanwhile, most of the Chengdu-bound passengers just sat around watching the plasma tv that was showing sports channel. ahh..thats how modern it has became. Halfway through the show, there was this particular China Eastern flight to Zhongdian Kunming seemed to have forgotten something as the pilot lowered the window and the ground crew threw up a string of headphones and the pilot was pulling up the headphones into the aircraft. Lol.
Flight CA 4401 arrived late at 1100h. Suddenly all rush to Gate 3 awaiting to be boarded. Many tourists exited out of the plane and started taking loads of pictures from the moment they stepped onto the airport. It was like deja vu...the day I stepped foot on Tibetan soil. The other Chengdu flights have arrived as well...one particular airline had their boarding gate changed at the 11th hour, causing passengers to scramble and run towards the new gate. Goodness! Such kiasuism cant even be found in our homeland!

Flight CA 4402; Airbus 330-300
It was really a squeeze and jostle boarding Flight CA 4402 at 1130h. The cutting-queue scene is rather bad. Pax who get booted out of CA 4404 gets blue-labelled tix while the original CA 4402 pax gets the green tix and sit behind all of the 4404 guys. Departed LXA gate 3 at 1147h. The plane move towards the end of the runway, started the turbo-jet engines, and before you know, the plane rotated 360degrees and zoom off the runway at 1155h. The LCD screen showed a spectacular overview of Lhasa the moment it departed....More & more snowcapped mountain ranges.

Himalaya Mountain Ranges of 5000-700m high
Namche Barwa (7756m)
Note that the plane is on average at 9000m high, hence the closeup view of the Himalayas.

Lunch was pretty simple and is considered a very complete full set by domestic standards.
Main Course: Minced meat mixed veg with rice
Side Dish: Mini Tomatoes / Salted veg / Sichuan Mala Sauce
Beverage: Choice of the usual drinks + Tibetan Yak Butter Tea (eeeks...)
The inflight entertainment was rather weird, it started off with a Aust documentary about the science & the lives of Kangaroos (seriously, there was many fascinating facts about these marsupials) and then the Garfield Movie again...
Upon exiting the Tibetan plateaus, there was a sudden fog and massive amounts of clouds causing low visibility; as the atm pressure changed, Flight CA 4402 had to went through several strong turbulances, rather impactful as I saw one of the airstewardess squatting down at the galley.
1337h - Flight CA 4402 arrives Chengdu Xuangliu Airport after delayed landing due to poor visibility.
Changing Rooms next to the baggage belt area (note the English =p)

Welcome to Chengdu Walled Gate
Lunch was at the same area as the 1st day (next to the stadium). The dishes were reduced to 8 as requested. As it is the weekend today, the traffic is even more clogged than ever. Checked into 4* Water Hotel Room 1622. After which, we explored the vicinity around our area.
The whole street is dedicated in selling handphones and those individuals along the road are buying 2nd hand handphones

China Postal Service (Chengdu)

Travelled to Jinsha District to have dinner at this herbal restaurant. Extravagrant as always, we were greeted by a lady playing the guzheng at the atrium.

Every single dish was presented with a speech of the health benefits that will bring you. Dishes (Clockwise): Steamed cucumber, Spicy Fried Shrimps with colored crackers, slices of dried meat (?), Herbal Vegetable Soup, Fried Chicken in oatmeal, Steamed Egg with Luncheon Meat, Braised Chicken in Herbal Sauce, Another Herbal Soup (Can't remember). Actually, every dish has a unique special name, but I didnt take down, otherwise the names would be very appetising. =p

The toilet sink...it was more like for deco purposes. Too irresistable not to get a pic taken.

Went to Tianfu Square again which is infront of Sichuan Science & Technology with a giant Mao Statue ahead. A daily music & light fountain show is displayed here and i assure you that this is defintely the most spectacular fountain show I've ever seen. We window-shopped around the area, which has developed more like Shanghai and headed back to hotel to watch King Kong on HBO. =p
