Northern India - Agra/Delhi >Day 05 / 3:38 pm

10 Dec 2003 (Day 05)

>>>>>***Pls read Day 01-04 before proceeding Day 05 to Agra/Delhi ******<<<<<<

Today is THE day...the day I've been awaiting for.....

Its relli unxpected that the 1st greatest wonder of the world im gonna visit is in India. Hahahaha...I've never dreamt abt that....all the way long i thought it'll be at my ancestor's place in Beijing....=p

We left at 0848h and proceeded to the buspark near Taj Mahal. The spectacular white marble mausoleum seems as immaculate today as when it was first constructed, altho' in recent yrs there has been growin' concerns abt the damage that atmospheric pollution is causing the Taj. Acid rain, produced by SO2 from vehicle emissions is discoloring the marble...eroding the fine carving & inlays....Hence...in an attempt to reduce pollution...new industrial dev. were BANNED from a 10,400 sq km exclusion zone...all motor vehicles are now prohibited 4km radius surrounding the monument.

The buspark area was chaotic!!! Lotsa touts, beggars, camels. From there...we were transferred to a mini battery-operated bus. A cute mini size with its engines so quiet! The way to Taj was crowded and we could hear honkings continously. The bus juz sped like nobody's business, swerve here & there whenever the road is free of traffic. Tho' the ride is free for foreigners..its Rs 4 for Indian locals...however foriegners muz pay Rs 750 (S$29.25) in contrast to Rs 20 (S$0.78) for the admission to the Taj!!!! OmG!!!!!!!!

Described as the most extravagant monument ever built for luv, this poignant Mughal mausoleum has become India's de facto tourist emblem.

The Taj was built by Emperor Shah Jahan (ahh...now u noe who is he isnt it)...as a mausoleum for his 2nd wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth in 1631. The death of Mumtaz left the emperor soooooo heartbroken that his hair is said to have turned grey overnight. Construction of the Taj begin in the same year and was not completed until 1653. In total, 20,000 pple from India & Central Asia worked on the building (some later had their hands/thumbs amputated to ensure that the perfection of Taj could NEVER be repeated....Sobz T___T**)

The construction bill is believed to have run to Rs 3 million, equivalent to US$60million today.

Entry to the inner compound is thru a vast red sandstone gateway on the South side of forecourt, inscribed with verses from Quran in Arabic. Security is verrrrry stringent. No food, tobacco, matches, mobile phones, camera tripods, betel nuts, elect items, sharp objects are allowed. Security check is divided into 2 diff genders...just like the airport usual checks.

Cameras are NOT allowed in the Taj!!!!! but outside alright....thats why you never see anyone having a shot anywhere else xcept the frontal view of Taj (excl. postcards).

The Taj Mahal itself stands on a raised platform...damn high!!! You will feel just like an AnT!!!! at the Taj. A red sandstone mosque to the west of Taj Mahal is an important gathering place for Agra's Muslims...and there is oso a exact copy on the eastern side...juz to make it symmetry...but it cannot be used as it is not facing Mecca. Haha.

The central Taj structure is constructed of semitranslucent white marble, carved with flowers and inlaid with thousands of semi-precious stones!!! WHoa! The whole structure is topped off by small domes surrounding the famous bulbous central dome.

Below the main dome is the Centopah of Mumtaz Mahal, an elaborate false tomb surrounded by an exquisite perforated screen inlaid with some erm...43 different semi-precious stones. Beside it, offsetting the symmetry of the Taj, is the Centopah of Shah Jahan (husband), who was interred here with little ceremony by Aurangzeb in 1666. Light is admitted into the central chamber by finely cut marble screens. Of course, the physical, real tombs are actually locked in a basement room below the main chamber which is inaccessible to all. A dark marble-stairs leading to.........

Why is the freakin' place sealed? All thanx to inconsiderate indians who carved their names..all the XXX luv XXX stuff...and missing gems & jewels off the walls & pillars...hence they sealed off the sacred place.

To prevent your shoes from dirtying/scratchin the place...u have 2 choices.

> Remove shoes. Carry them such that the base of one side muz face the other side of the base of the other pair.

> For a price, get a 'sock' for your shoe and wear over it. Comes in many colors...hehe...for those who seen my pix on msn...that is how it looks like.

.......After the mesmerising visit at the Taj, we left at 1136h by electric bus. Along the way, we pass by some fruit markets, a scene with lotsa dead bloody dogs lying there due to accidents...raw bloody chickens hanging at the markets. WoW....what a sight!!!

Had lunch at some Mughal restaurant. Was meant to be outdoor dining, but turned out to be so stuffy & humid. Well....luckily we moved in...ahh...air-con. We had bryani rice, curry mutton/mix veg, black tea (weird taste) and some rice pudding???!!!

Before we depart back to Delhi, we went to Akbar's Mausoleum. One of the greatest Mughal emperors, his stunning 3 storey minarets at each corner and its red sandstone impresses me. Due to the hectic schedule, there was no time to enter anyway.///

Finally....we are on our way back to Delhi thru Highway 2 - reputedly the longest in the world??!! 2000+km,...from south india all the way to Jammu & Kashmir.

This time...the highway finally have dividers between the 2 directions...I feel more safe. Haha. Some interesting sceneries...hmmm....there's a place more like a oil-tanker train depot.Lotsa rusty oil tanker trains...still see workers smoking there...i tell you...one day they'll ignite the drifting fumes and it'll be a huge cemetry there! =O

The weather got hazier...visibility was getting lower. Hardly anymore camels on roadside. Weird thing is that...the dividers are gone...but the road markings are ALL slanting!!! OmG!!!

Since the journey is a looooong one, we made a rest at another colonial motel...Rajasthan Motel. Reminded me of Amber Fort...there's even a traditional guard in his trad. costume with a sharp weapon near him standing at the gate!!!! Ahhh...the scenery was perfect manz!!!! The sun is now like a red sotong-ball in the foggy...erm or should i say polluted sky... Surroundings is nothing but agricultural plots of land. No elect. Behind the motel is a railway track. I was lucky to catch Indian Railways train running past it! Hmm...sad tho' ....i was xpectin a scene of a crowded train like those you see in Mumbai!!! Those pple like sardines overflowing out of the can...hahahaha.....That train sure had a deafening horn!!!

Left at 1720h to continue our journey. The sun setted. The atmosphere is totally filled with fog! The temperature dropped to about 13-15C from about 28C in the afternoon! We were soon travelling in pitch-black surroundings.

1940h - Arrived at Delhi!!!! Whooppeeee!!! Civilisation!!!! (i saw Macs!!! haha!=D)

This time...the place is freakin' crowded..no more animals..xcept wild buffaloes still rummaging for their dinner (poor lads -_-). Urgh!!! The traffic jam is Horrible!!!! Anyway, many people dun follow traffic rulz...tho'...ironically they have more than 100 of them. Even in the capital, certain stretches of the road is in pitch-black. Yeah...those dirty roadside scenes..faeces..still prevalent. Sights of slums & squatters are still everywhere.....

And finally!!! Though we arrived in Delhi..we took another hour to get nto central Delhi. Dinner for tonite is at a Chinese restaurant!!!! OmG@!!!! Whoppeeee!!! I can nvr be happier than that!!! The food is succulent...delicious manz!!!! Im sick of all the same food all day!!! Sick of spicy stuff!!! (tho' the chinese food is still spicy). Yea...that restaurant had that 'cheena' ambience. Waiters dressed in those traditional costumes.

The food is real good...Chinese veg soup, marinated chicken, fried chicken, boiled veg, noodles, vanilla ice-cream, steam rice, jasmine tea! Nice eh??? Somemore this is Delhi!!! Nearby...is a rather hip & active place....pubs....i still see Indians playing cricket in the middle of the night!!!!

After a nice appetite...our accomodation is none other than another luxurious Marriott hotel. This time...no more colonial hotel. A modern, spanking-new hotel with hmm....at least more than 15 storeys. All the standard facilities like gym, spa, jacuzzi, swimming pool.....wow....!!! We were served cocktail drinks the moment we entered. Delicious!!! Wanted more..hehe....

Check-in at Room 446!
